The Art of Contrast: LIfe in Black and White
Les Femmes du Samedi #11 by Josette Simon-Gestin
This Thursday, 1515 Lincoln Gallery unveils Life in Black and White, a compelling group exhibition that unites diverse artistic voices through monochromatic compositions. Curated by Serbian artist Bojan Grof, who is also featured in the show, this thought-provoking collection explores contrast, nuance, and the depth that black-and-white artwork can convey.
Grof, known for his critique of contemporary cultural conditions, frequently addresses themes of social exclusion, freedom, poverty, and war. His work reflects on humanity’s impact on wildlife while drawing inspiration from everyday objects. Collaborating with gallery owner and director Susan McCalmont, Grof assembled this exhibition to highlight the powerful interplay of stark contrasts and subtle shades.
“The idea started with a simple observation—many artists gravitate toward black-and-white work,” Grof explains. “I wanted to bring them together, not just for their aesthetic approach, but also to contrast perspectives—rationality against intuition—and to showcase the beauty of diversity.” He continues, “I hope visitors leave with a deeper understanding of the artists through their work. I want them to see that diversity connects people and that black and white, just like opposing perspectives, can complement each other.”

Through the absence of color, the featured artists’ works find a sense of unity despite their distinct perspectives. Marc Barker’s poetic cloudscapes capture the fleeting nature of the sky, imbuing it with emotion and depth. Chris Brizzard’s compositions explore the tension between realism and abstraction, deconstructing figures, animals, and landscapes. Josette Simon-Gestin crafts whimsical, dreamlike worlds featuring women navigating expansive landscapes and seascapes. Other participating artists include Jon Burris, James Cobb, Katherine Liontas-Warren, Danny Joe Rose III, and more.
Whether drawn to the stark interplay of black and white or intrigued by the philosophical depth of contrast, Life in Black and White invites viewers to explore the world through a different lens. Don’t miss this striking exhibition at 1515 Lincoln Gallery.
