LENA KHVICHA
BIOGRAPHY
Lena Khvichia reveals herself as a creative and undoubtedly gifted painter, interpreting Lithuanian coloristic painting tradition and abstract painting aesthetics in her own manner. She is an emotional artist: however her works are very constructive and well balanced in terms of composition, which disciplines, her hand's movements, and broad strokes. Lena Khvichia’s works, usually beings of tranquil surface facture, never seem flat, are seen as having depth, a third dimension, even though the paintings only vaguely imply the objects of the real world. The expressive layer can be recognized to a certain extent even in her most abstract works—mostly the reflections of subconscious impressions and moods experienced by the author. Lena Khvichia may be described as having sensitive space hearing, she hears the sound of the dim light of her illusion—like space, and this color hearing obviously helps to obtain such a sound.
ARTIST INSIGHTS
How are your background and life experiences connected to your art?
There is a popular version that art is sublimation. I do not think that I am something original. Yes -my art is about me and this is me.
Who are some of your biggest artistic influences?
Art of the 20th century. Time for generators of ideas and daredevils. And, of course, my teachers.
How have you developed your artist career?
I think this is often facilitated by new countries, new professional experiences, and contacts.
What does your artistic work intend to communicate to its audience?
There are cryptic and ephemeral characters living in my abstractions, sometimes they are hiding behind the closed doors, corners, or even beyond the other side of our own borders. These characters are living their stories, going through sorrow or enjoyment. Although the viewer cannot always see them, one can be sure they are in these abstract paintings, like actors waiting for another biss behind theatre curtains. All these happy or sad stories are highlighted by edgy states of nature, supporting them and camouflaging with night, fog, or simple catharsis.
What is one thing you would like your audience to know about you?
I love my friends, my Vilnius, night and blue.
Which current art world trends are you following?
I like to meet original, or better, unique colleagues, and I do not so much follow, how much I rejoice and admire their creativity. It is extremely difficult to be original in a world where it would seem, everything was already there.
Why have you chosen to sell your work in the 1515 Lincoln Gallery?
It is, a new gallery for me with a very nice leader and a new continent to explore!
