ARTIST INSIGHTS

How are your background and life experiences connected to your art?

When I was younger I used to love learning all about space and how things were composed. While I've always been fascinated by these topics, they also overwhelmed me at times and made me wonder where I fit into it all. As I got older, I became more interested in the relationships occurring in these micro and macro spaces and began to also reexamine my own relationships with everything.

Who are some of your biggest artistic influences?

Mark Bradford, Donald Judd, Rana Begum.

How have you developed your artist career?

After receiving my BFA I spent some time experimenting with different materials and developing a consistent visual language and patterning. I started out creating smaller works for local juried exhibitions but also knew I wanted to contribute to the local community in other ways too. Through the connections I was able to make early in my career I was also invited to contribute to a local non profit, Inclusion In Art. As I continued to cultivate both of these parts of my career I pushed myself to expand my body of work and organize exhibitions for myself, as well Inclusion In Art. This eventually led to bigger opportunities and connected me to a number of different arts spaces and initiatives.

What does your artistic work intend to communicate to its audience?

I work to create a dialogue between materials and visual elements that emphasizes their relationships but also leaves the imagery open to interpretation.

Does your work comment on any current social or political issues?

My work doesn't comment on any issue specifically. I design my imagery to be universally viewed so that the viewer can draw their own conclusions and apply their own interpretations to the work.

Do you have a particular story that stands out from your career as an artist?

It has to be the year and half spent putting together the "Spirit of Color" exhibition with Inclusion In Art. We partnered with several organizations to feature the work of 9 artists of color who had contributed to the Oklahoma arts community for many years. Getting to sit down with these artists, listen to their journeys and celebrate their accomplishments with them has been one of my favorite experiences thus far.

What is one thing you would like your audience to know about you?

I am very process oriented and love to utilize different methods of layering and construction in my work.

Why have you chosen to sell your work in the 1515 Lincoln Gallery?

1515 Lincoln Gallery is always looking for the best way to make genuine connections between artists and collectors. I also love the emphasis on building relationships between the gallery artists as well.

What do you believe makes 1515 Lincoln Gallery distinct from other galleries?

The range of artwork from both local and international artists you can find at 1515 Lincoln Gallery makes it a very unique and cool space.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I create work that investigates relationships between layers of spontaneous material application, spontaneous pattern building and definitive linear elements. I use various inks, powder pigments, papers, paint and polycrylic to build systems that interact physically and visually. I draw inspiration from atomic systems and the seemingly infinite relationships they take part in. With the vast and various types of relationships that exist, I choose to create imagery that could represent any possible outcome.
