MATT GOAD

“Finding order and meaning through line color and composition.”

BIOGRAPHY

Oklahoma artist Matt Goad began his art career while working as a graphic designer and illustrator in the mid 90s. Woodblock printing and its hard edged graphic aesthetic helped inform his modern style which he would take into the realm of paintings in the 2000’s. Passionate about color, composition and telling a story, his geometric approach pulls viewers through a compositional narrative. His work is easily accessible to the public and enjoyed by many, young, old, and across cultural identities. Matt’s work is included in many private and public collections around the world, and he’s been featured in numerous art and design publications, websites and documentary productions including Print, Communication Arts, PBS’s Gallery America and Voksee’s Good to Know to name a few.

ARTIST INSIGHTS

How are your background and life experiences connected to your art?

As a youth my family moved across the US, almost yearly, eventually landing in the desert southwest. This upbringing, although somewhat unstable, gave me a unique perspective of the diverse nature and cultures of America. Art, to me, is a way of finding order and permanence and provides an outlet that is both therapeutic and positive.

Who are some of your biggest artistic influences?

Stuart Davis, Fernand Léger, Pablo Picasso, Alvin Lustig, Charley Harper, Saul Bass, German Expressionism, Mexican printmaking, Native American designs.

How have you developed your artist career?

My background as a graphic designer and illustrator not only helped me define my artistic style but also taught me the vital importance of relationships. These connections have been key in my reaching an increasingly larger audience through the years.

What does your artistic work intend to communicate to its audience?

The power of love, positivity and order in chaos.

Does your work comment on any current social or political issues?

I am more concerned with the larger picture of humankind's existence and view or the universe that surrounds us than current political events.

Do you have a particular story that stands out from your career as an artist?

In 2010 I painted a piece which eventually sold through my website to a couple in Texas. Upon delivery I was informed that the story in the painting was essentially the story of their lives, verbatim. It was then that I knew that this art thing was more than a career. It was a calling.

What is one thing you would like your audience to know about you?

That I am passionate about nature and the universe and that it has infinite stories to tell us.

Which current art world trends are you following?

NFTs. The space where technology and art meet. Street art. Non traditional mediums such as light and sound.

Why have you chosen to sell your work in the 1515 Lincoln Gallery?

I believe in Susan, her vision, and the other artists in the gallery all of whom I deeply respect.

What do you believe makes 1515 Lincoln Gallery distinct from other galleries?

The diversity, artistically, culturally and regionally of the artists represented.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Creating narratives with line, color and composition is my passion. Allowing my subconscious to direct the next story to be told is my approach. The hard edged geometry and clean lines of my work is my way of finding order in an often chaotic universe.
