Inaugural Collector’s Circle Art & Culture Trip
Art and travel have been vital throughout my life. Traveling to new places always opens us to new experiences, relationships, and ways of seeing the world. Art created by local artists can reflect the history, culture, aesthetics and life of the people and its urban environment. Whether I'm visiting museums, galleries, or cultural institutions, each adds understanding and appreciation of the unique artistic heritage of a destination. Ultimately, my love for art and travel stems from a desire to learn, grow, and connect meaningfully with others. So, with the new 1515 Lincoln Gallery, I am launching the Collector's Circle Art & Culture Trip this May to share these opportunities with you and our growing art community.
From May 23rd to the 28th, we will take art lovers and collectors on an unforgettable trip to Montreal, Quebec, to meet our consigned artist, Demetrios Papakostas, and explore Montreal's art and culture. My hope is that the trip will expand our awareness and understanding of another art-centric destination and strengthen our relationships and grow our artistic community through a unique travel experience. Demetrios Papakostas, a celebrated abstract painter based in Montreal, has graciously agreed to help facilitate our first Collector's Circle Art & Culture Trip and open his studio and gallery to our group.
Demetrios is a contemporary painter known for his bold and expressive abstract paintings. Born in Greece, Demetrios moved to Canada in 1970 and has been creating art for over four decades. His paintings are characterized by their vibrant colors, gestural brushstrokes, and dynamic compositions that explore themes of movement and energy. Demetrios draws inspiration from various sources, including nature, music, and his emotional experiences. Demetrios says, "I am excited to have the inaugural Collector's Circle Art & Culture Trip be in Montreal, and I look forward to opening the doors to my studio, sharing my current work, and discussing the influence the city has had on my work." His paintings have been exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States, Canada, and Europe. We will meet Demetrios at his studio and Galerie ERGA to have a private viewing of his latest works, explore his gallery, Galerie ERGA, and engage in conversation about art and the influence living in Montreal has had on his work.
As the largest city in Quebec, Montreal has a thriving arts scene with many galleries, museums, and cultural institutions to visit. The city's European influence is found in its architecture, particularly in the historic district of Old Montreal. Demetrios says, "Montreal is an incredible destination for the arts because of its thriving multicultural creative community. The city is a diverse melting pot with artists from all walks of life coming together to produce compelling contemporary art which is world-renowned. Alongside its artistic community, Montreal is rich with museums, cafes, and restaurants which bring together its French and North American heritage in rich, ever-changing cultural offerings." The city is also known for its lively culinary scene, blending different cultures and cuisines. From classic French bistros to trendy fusion restaurants, there is no shortage of delicious dining options, which we will explore during the trip. Whether you are interested in visual art, culinary arts, or architecture, Montreal offers something to everyone who wants to explore and immerse themselves in the city's rich artistic and cultural heritage.
While in Montreal, we will walk along historic cobblestone streets, experience internationally renowned architecture, and taste delicious gastronomic creations while experiencing new art and enhancing our artistic knowledge. We will stay at the famed Fairmont, The Queen Elizabeth Hotel, where John Lennon & Yoko Ono held their infamous bed-in which is now home to a permanent art collection displaying 123 works by 37 contemporary Canadian artists.
Christian theologian and philosopher Saint Augustine once said, "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page." Saint Augustine's statement emphasizes the value of travel in broadening one's perspective and understanding of the world. It also highlights the importance of experiencing art and culture in different parts of the world, as they offer unique insights into the human experience and inspire creativity and growth. Travel and art experiences can be transformative, providing opportunities for personal growth and expanding one's worldview beyond what we can from home. I hope our Collector's Circle Art & Culture Trip to Montreal will be the first of many trips to fascinating art-centric cities that stimulate, inspire, and strengthen our artistic community.
