Along These Lines

  • 1515 Lincoln Gallery 1515 North Lincoln Boulevard Oklahoma City, OK 73104 United States (map)

1515 Lincoln Gallery invites you to experience the bold works of Montreal-based artist,  Demetrios Papakostas, in his exhibition Along These Lines. Demetrios' dynamic collection of hard-edge and geometric oil paintings explores the journeys and directions of life. With precise linework and bold color fields, Demetrios plays with life's linearity, unexpected shifts, and restrictions. Demetrios says, "I hope to embody the myriad ways we relate to our mind's borders, the desire to control versus the freedom of experience." His exhibition encompasses five years of creative journey through striking geometric artworks. In Along These Lines,  Demetrios hopes to instill in viewers that time is linear, but life is not.

We invite you to our "Meet the Artist" event on Friday, November 10th, from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. to engage in lively conversations with Demetrios about his work. Wine will be available for sale, and space is limited, so we encourage you to reserve your spot today by emailing info@1515lg.com or calling 405-593-1063.

About Demetrios Papakostas

Demetrios Papakostas was born in Montreal in 1960 and raised in the city's vibrant multiculturalism by his parents, immigrants of Greek descent who made Canada their home. Demetrios loved to draw comics and superheroes as a kid but discovered the world of professional art while on a trip to Greece with his family when he was eleven. Demetrios visited the home of a full-time artist who was a family friend, and he was awestruck by the potential of a creative life. His parents did not consider art a career, but Demetrios continued to draw and, over the years, improved his artistic skills.

Demetrios worked in Graphic Design as a creative outlet that provided a stable career until a watercolor course at the Montreal Visual Arts Centre in his thirties ignited his desire to pursue fine art seriously. After the course ended, Demetrios continued to study with art teacher Heather Yamada and began producing abstract landscapes in his home studio. When he outgrew his home studio, Demetrios moved to an independent art studio, a pivotal step in becoming a professional artist. He began working in oil paintings, taking inspiration from renowned Canadian artists such as Eve Gauthier, Guido Molinari, and Claude Tousignant. Fascinated by architecture, Demetrios ventured into the style of hard-edge geometric abstraction to explore the relationship between conceptual thinking and the human condition. Twelve years on, Demetrios has created a vast body of enriching creative work as a professional artist in hard edge, color field paintings, and freeform abstraction.

In 2016, the building housing Demetrios Papakostas' art studio closed, and he decided to buy a property to establish his own studio and art gallery. Demetrios created Galerie Erga, a rental gallery and community space dedicated to artists producing independent exhibitions. For over seven years, Galerie Erga has been a thriving rental gallery and cultural space supporting various emerging and professional artists across Quebec and beyond. In his upcoming 1515 Lincoln Gallery exhibition, "Along these Lines," Demetrios explores the linearity of experience and how art can capture the shifts we face in our life journeys.
