The Hippopotamus Family by Yulaiyla Grays Larru

What led you to become an artist?

My path to becoming an artist was shaped by early exposure to art, formal education, inspiration from nature and travel, the need for personal expression, influence from other artists, and the support of an artistic community. These elements combined to ignite and sustain my passion for creating art.

Can you describe a typical day or routine in your studio?

My typical day in the studio is structured yet flexible enough to allow for the creative process. I start my day with yoga, though I occasionally switch to cycling, running, or swimming. This helps me get into a creative mindset. During the main part of the day, I focus on current projects, which could involve working on a new painting, preparing for an exhibition, or completing commissioned pieces. I try to alternate between different projects to keep things fresh and inspiring. Throughout the day, I take short breaks to rest and recharge, which helps me avoid fatigue and maintain high productivity. In the evening, I spend time with my family, watch movies, or read books. This routine helps me stay productive and inspired, ensuring a balance between work and relaxation.

How would you describe your artistic style?

My artistic style can be described as a combination of realism and abstraction, with an emphasis on experimental techniques and vibrant colors. Although these two styles may seem contrasting, artists often blend their elements to create

unique and intriguing works. My art is characterized by dynamic compositions, fabric textures, and rich hues, which create depth and movement in my pieces. I aim to evoke not only visual beauty but also an emotional response in the viewer, stimulating reflection and inner experiences.

What materials and techniques do you prefer to work with, and why?

In my work, I predominantly use artificial suede, velvet, and velour as the base for my paintings. As for technique, I have transitioned to acrylic paints, although I previously worked exclusively with oil paints. The use of synthetic fabrics and acrylic allows me to achieve greater texture and depth in my artwork, as well as work faster and more efficiently. These materials also afford me more freedom to experiment and create more expressive and emotionally rich pieces.

How do you approach color and composition in your paintings?

In my work, I strive to create a harmonious blend of vibrant colors and composition to convey the desired mood and emotions in my paintings. I experiment with various colors, using them to create depth and atmosphere in the artwork. Composition is also crucial to me; I aim to craft an engaging and balanced composition that captures the viewer's attention and encourages them to explore the painting further.

Is there any advice you would give to aspiring painters based on your experiences?

My advice for young artists is based on my own experience: do not be afraid to experiment and grow. Dedicate time to exploring different techniques and materials, and don't fear making mistakes as they can be valuable teachers. It's also important to believe in yourself and your uniqueness and to avoid comparing yourself to others as everyone has their own artistic journey. Keep in mind continuous growth and practice; practice makes perfect, and each subsequent piece can be better than the last.

What themes or subjects inspire your artwork the most?

My art is mostly inspired by nature, emotions, and human relationships. I often use these themes in my works, aiming to embody them in my painting compositions.

Are there any particular artists or movements that have influenced your work?

I want to mention that the work of Edgar Hunt, like that of other artists, is a source of inspiration for me. His ability to depict the animal world with such clarity and mastery always captivates and inspires me in my own work.

How do you stay motivated and engaged in your work?

My inspiration and motivation come from various sources. I find inspiration in nature, the work of other artists, travels, and new experiences. Support from friends, family, and colleagues is also important. To stay motivated, I set clear goals, develop action plans, and continuously improve my skills. The most important thing is to keep learning and evolving in my art.
